XIII intergenerational meeting.

ALPZA

LATIN AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOOLOGICAL PARKS AND AQUARIUMS

XXIV Congress of the Latin American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (ALPZA)

During the week of May 29 to June 2, the XXIV Congress of the Latin American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (ALPZA) was held at the Convention Center of Havana, with the participation of 12 countries, such as : Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Panama, Peru, Mexico and Cuba, among other nations.

The main topics addressed in the event were the management of terrestrial and aquatic fauna in captivity, environmental education, behavior, nutrition, animal welfare and health, maintenance, ethics, environmental management, exhibition design, among other topics.

Scientists, veterinarians and specialists from the National Aquarium of Cuba were part of the delegates who attended the event, presenting scientific papers through presentations and posters, thus contributing to the exchange and dissemination of experiences and knowledge that favor animal welfare and the improvement of educational strategies. La feria expositiva del evento contó con un stand del acuario, que promovió los servicios que ofrece y presentó una muestra de la literatura científica de algunos investigadores del centro. The exhibition fair featured an aquarium booth, which promoted the services offered and presented a sample of the scientific literature of some researchers at the center.

Discovering the mesofóticos reefs of Cuba.

During the days of May 17 to June 12, 2017, an expedition was carried out all over Cuba onboard the RV Walton Smith belonging to the University of Miami, in the same participated jointly US scientists and Cuban centers such as: The National Aquarium of Cuba, the Institute of Marine Sciences and the National Center for Protected Areas, all belonging to the Ministry of Science Technology and Environment, also had scientific participation from the Marine Research Center of the University of Havana, Fisheries Regulations of the Ministry of the Food Industry and the Geocuba Business Group.

“Held on June 5th

In 1972, the General Assembly of the United Nations established June 5 as World Environment Day, which is now commemorated in more than 100 countries.

Our country every year carries out campaigns that support this important date; The National Aquarium of Cuba, as a center belonging to the Ministry of Science Technology and Environment, organized a varied plan of activities in conjunction with the National Office for the Rational Use of Energy (ONURE). With the aim of celebrating the day of the environment, recreational didactic games were developed, all linked to strengthening the love of nature, especially the marine and coastal resources and the rational use of energy with interesting riddles that kept the Attention of large and small. The hidden treasure turned out to be within the preferred games, of great interest were the observations of plant cells in the microscope, the visitors could exchange with the scientists and specialists present on the characteristics of different marine and terrestrial species.

“Unforgettable moments”

As part of the activities that complement the scientific program of the XXII Scientific Children's Day of the National Aquarium of Cuba, the Environmental Education group inaugurated a beautiful exhibition titled: "Unforgettable Meetings", which summarizes the most important activities developed in these days. The exhibit is dedicated to Rosa Elena Simeón Negrín, who was Minister of Science and Technology for many years and left a valuable memory in every corner of our institution. The public can visit it from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., from Tuesday to Sunday.

¡Celebrating april 4!

On the morning of April 4, workers from this center met in the Tropical Island area of the National Aquarium of Cuba to celebrate, together with all the young people of the institution, the 55th Anniversary of the creation of the Youth Union Communists and the 56th Anniversary of the José Martí Pioneers Organization, always bearing in mind the words spoken at the First Congress of the UJC in 1962 by our Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, when he said: To be a young communist, you have to have the character to be a young communist, you have to have vocation to be a young communist, you have to know how to comply; If you are a student, you have to be inexorably good student: if you are a factory worker, you have to be a model worker in that factory; You have to be an example of good companion, you have to be an example of sacrifice, you have to be an example of a will; They must be first in everything; In the work, in the study, in the sports, in the life of relation with the other companions"

XXII - “For the best protection of our seas and coasts”

This year, we celebrated the 22nd edition of the Scientific Child Day "For the best protection of our seas and coasts". The opening gala was attended by the Cuban singer-songwriter Lidis Lamorú Febles and her little daughter Lorena.

During the second day of work, delegates nourished the charisma of Dr. Aleida Guevara March, daughter of the heroic guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara, we also had the honor of meeting with Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, Hero of the Republic of Cuba.

With the participation of more than 650 delegates, we dealt with issues related to environmental care, marine species in danger of extinction, measures taken in our country to protect marine biodiversity, impacts of climate change on flora And fauna. The themes were addressed through presentations, posters, drawings, poems, songs and models.

Anniversary 57 of the National Aquarium of Cuba.

In a day like today but of year 1960 the National Aquarium of Cuba definitively opens its doors to the public. Its diverse activities, for more than five decades, have been a rich source of knowledge, education and marine environmental culture. Immersed in the repairs and renovations we are experiencing, we welcome our 57th birthday.

Many Congratulations to all the workers of the center for this new anniversary, thanks for the day to day and the continuous work; Thanks also to the public who visits us for their preference and for sharing with us the results of a work dedicated to putting "the world of the sea available to all" .

Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Aquarium of Cuba and the Harte Research Institute.

On January 19, 2017, the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Aquarium of Cuba (ANC), belonging to the Ministry of Science and Technology and Environment (CITMA) and the Harte Research Institute for the Gulf of Mexico Studies.

Both sides have similar missions and visions, including collecting information on "ex situ" populations as a contribution to the conservation of marine resources and aquatic ecosystems, working collaboratively to learn from each other, join forces in research projects And educational workshops and multiply their efficiency, the two organizations wish to create a supportive framework for effective collaboration, strengthening scientific, educational, environmental and cultural conservation research opportunities necessary for the protection of marine-coastal resources in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Both recognize that in the long term conservation efforts require the collaboration and participation of local communities and partners in each country and agree to support the Trinational Marine Science and Conservation Initiative in the Gulf of Mexico and the Western Caribbean Sea.


They agree to sign this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the purpose of stimulating mutual understanding for the strengthening of scientific and cultural ties and providing opportunities to broaden participants' horizons and experiences


DECLARATION OF THE NATIONAL AQUARIUM OF CUBA

The workers of the CUBA NATIONAL AQUARIUM join the people of Cuba, and all those who today suffer greatly the loss of our ETERNAL COMMANDANT. Unique, incomparable man, who with his leadership and great human sense was able to guide his people step by step with the exact precision of the ideals of full justice and freedom. They will be sad and unforgettable days but the unconditional legacy remains in favor of the human improvement, the sacrifice and the unit.

The tears are over when the pain is immense and the heart overwhelms the feeling of irreparable loss. But at the same time the ideas and teachings are the commitment to keep alive the presence of a giant.

Fidel was accompanying us in hurricanes, inauguration of new facilities and in every achievement that has had THE NATIONAL AQUARIUM OF CUBA in its 55 years of foundation. ALWAYS TRUST IN US, I WAS SAFE THAT WE WOULD GIVE THE MAXIMUM BY FULFILLING EVERY OF THE TASKS WE HAD USED. THAT IS ALWAYS BETWEEN US, WE WILL SEE THEM IN EVERY VISITOR, IN EVERY SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL EVENT, IN EVERY DEVELOPMENT WORK THAT WE INAUGURATE ... UNTIL WE WANTED FIDEL, THE WORKERS OF THE AQUARIUM WE REMEMBER YOU WITH INFINITE LOVE AND RESPECT.
