“UNFORGETTABLE MEETING”
IMATA is an established association to share professionally all the new thing that it appears in the handling of the marine mammals, attending its big role in the animal kingdom, in its respective marine ecosystems and in the aquariums, dolphinariums and other specialised institutions. For this, is gathered annually, promoting the scientific results and exhorting to the best one attention of these species in controlled conditions.
In 1998 colleagues of the park Zoomarine of Algarve, Portugal visited the National Aquarium of Cuba, when knowing our work, encouraged and supported the share of national specialists in the Annual Meeting of IMATA that, in that year, would be made in that beautiful country. The invitation was accepted and results reached were presented, until that moment, in the training of dolphins Tursiops truncatus. Was explained as technical contribution an effective handling that allowed the development of the natural abilities of these animals, an “aquatic ballet”, made between dolphins and trainers and during which did not mediate the stimulus food. The surprise was not made to expect and the National Aquarium of Cuba obtained the distinguished international recognition of that year.
The Cuban aquarium has maintained its relationships with the above-mentioned association, has participated in some of its events and received with great approval the proposal so that the meeting of the year present 2010 for the region of Caribbean, was made in Cuba, as part of activities of celebration of the 50 anniversary of the institution.

In these are included, seven prestigious professionals of institutions North American, backed with a significant evolution with regard to marine mammal' handling. Particular mention deserves the share of the current chairman of IMATA, Mr Dave Scott Roberts and the Deputy Chairman of Conservation Animal Debborah Colbert, of the Association of Zoological and Aquariums of THE USA.
In two days of tight work sessions were presented 14 conferences linked to the update of the techniques of marine mammal' training; the educational and scientific role of the institutions zoological and aquariums type to promote the protection and conservation of the species and marine ecosystems; the most advanced technologies linked to the training and the care of marine mammals; the special attention of the mass animal directed to the training of medical conducts; the rehabilitation of species beached in coastal areas; the programmes of gestation, reproduction and artificial insemination; the solution of the problems linked to the training of animals; reflections around cares and the attention of geriatric populations and a valuable time dedicated to to exchange experiences, methods of works and other significant experiences for the successful handling of these charismatic species.

NEW RECOGNITION….
The National Aquarium of Cuba has received with joy and satisfaction a new recognition for the made work. It is a question of the PRIZE SPACE 2010. This prize is given by the Association of Social Communicators of Cuba and is justified fully with the specialised informative work of the institution to contribute to the popular knowledge about seas and coasts directed to promote the society's environmental culture and to encourage actions for the protection and the conservation of the marine environment and its resources for future generations.

PROJECTS
NEW CHALLENGES FOR THE SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY:
The National Aquarium of Cuba is a scientific institution and educational, for this reason the performance of investigations is starts from its daily work. With the summer 2010 the second half of the year present is initiated. While many address to rest some work intensively to give healthy entertainment for the vacacionistas and other, scientist, get ready for a significant moment, the defense of the results of investigation before the Think-tank of the Agency of Environment. In this case projects are found that they will conclude in order to year:
Population and clinical evaluation structure of the T. truncatus in the Archipelago Sabana-Camagüey. (Project manager: Nirka López)
Population study of two seahorse species in different areas of Cuba. (Project manager: Lourdes Pastor)
Other projects, do not conclude this year but they take place with normality. It is a question of two significant investigations:
Biotic community diagnosis focal in reefs coralinos of Cuba directed to the affectation for hurricanes.
Preliminary study of the presence of the fish lion in Cuban waters
Both will conclude with similar defense in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
As significant news contribute that, were pass marks two investigation new projects also to carry out by scientist of the institution and that they will initiate its activities next year 2011. These are:
Parameters poblacionales and clinical of dolphins “toninas” T. truncatus that they dwell in the coast north head office of the Archipelago Sabana-Camagüey. (Project manager: Nirka López)
Automated inventory of the Cuban types of marine species. (Project manager: Diana Ibarzábal)

SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP
... VERY OPPORTUNE….
For its permanent attention work to the Marine Biological Diversity, between July 5 and 8, the National Aquarium of Cuba was invited to participate in the First Workshop of the Network CYTED “all-inclusive Evaluation of the state of conservation of the biodiversity in marine ecosystems and coastal of the coastline of Latin America for the adjustment to the climate change”. The comprehensive network for a valuable specialists group and national and foreign institutions is dedicated to encourage the conservation of the biodiversity in marine ecosystems and coastal.
Attending to its experience in the handling and investigations with regard to marine mammals and biodiversity, the National Aquarium of Cuba, was represented by the MSc Nirka López, specialist of the institution that gave the conference: “Dolphins and the marine and coastal habitats in Cuba: proposals for the adjustment to the climate change” This specialist, is the manager project: Population study and clinical evaluation of the Tursiops truncatus in the Archipelago Sabana Camagüey that it will conclude at the end of the present year.
Furthermore, MSc Pedro P Chevalier also specialist of the Aquarium National of Cuba presented the conference: “The lionfish : major threat to the conservation of the marine ecosystems in Cuba”. The MSc Pedro P. Chevalier is the manager project: Study of the presence of the lionfish in Cuban waters that it takes place in the institution.
Other significant conferences directed the attention to the state of conservation of the marine biodiversity, with special attention to coral reefs, mangroves, seagrasses, and the fishing sustainability. Similarly were presented conferences related to the coastal handling of the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, the regional approach to the handling of the marine areas protected, manatees, sea turtles, lobsters, sharks and the problems that it faces before exotic species and invaders. The workshop offered the possibility of developing significant debates sessions and reflections.

Marine Collections
SERVICE FOR THE SCIENCE.
In 2004 the National Aquarium of Cuba received with valuable joy and responsibility marine collections born in the Institute of Oceanology. Significant challenges assumed the institution, among others many, to achieve the confidence so that, scientist and institutions nationals and foreign decided to contribute its specimens so that they were part of its fund.
At the close of 2009 collections were comprehensive for 15 703 lots; 3137 species; 51, 299 specimens; 223 types and 35 taxonomic groups, faithful representation of the splendid biodiversity of our seas and coasts.
In the first half of the present year 2010, the increase was made even more notable, with 100 new lots with 100 units of 31 species. But even more were added 4 new types of nematodes, deposited for the Centre of Marine Researches of the Havana University and a new collection (of zoantideos) delivered by the Centre of Marine Bioactives, with it was increased to 36 taxonomic groups.
... And About THESE MARINE …COLLECTIONS
Was announced the existence of the collection of treasured marine algaes in the Scientific Collection of the National Aquarium of Cuba and it is over of receiving the pleasant information of that it has been included in the Index Herbariorum of New York Botanical Garden. Significant step in the advance of the work of the Collections Department, as guarantees, encourages and it warrants that specialists and the national and foreign institutions can know, consult part of its daily research, but also, it is demonstrated that the confidence is increased so that these deposit its specimens in this valuable collection scientist. The name of the herbarium is now HANC (Herbarium of the Aquarium National of Cuba). When entering the page http://sweetgum.nybg.org/ih/herbarium.php?irn=163434 can find all the information.

But even more…to provide the enquiry of the collections of reference of the ANC and to guarantee its conservation and handling, concluded last year the project of digitisation of the collection of stony corals, considered one of the more significant and numerous of the fauna of Caribbean corals. Among others was obtained as a consequence the creation of CD ROM “Corales Pétreos de Cuba” that it includes descriptions and diagnosis of each one of the species, subspecies and ways within the book “Escleractíneos of Cuba” of the authors Vassil Zlatarski and Nereida Martínez, 81 maps with places where they were collected each of them and images of each one of the 5,031 units that integrate the collection. It appears a brief history in the introduction of the training of the collection and of studies of the stony corals in Cuba. This CD ROM will be available shortly in this page, at the disposal of all the interested in the taxonomy and systematic of the Caribbean corals.
