Participation in two projects of the Global Environment Fund (UNDP-GEF).

Improving the prevention, control and management of invasive alien species in vulnerable ecosystems in Cuba.

Implementation of a regional approach to managing marine and coastal protected areas in the archipelago south of Cuba.

 

 

After a major readjustment of the national plans regarding science and technology, was started an improvement of the scientific activity whereas the achieved experience as well as the new trends on Aquariums management and marine mammals were taken into account.

The development of the different research tasks takes place according to the thematic and the specialized service of the institution, increasing so their quality as well as know-how about the natural ecosystems that form part of it.  In this regards the institution develops five main research projects:

1. Diagnosis of the biotic communities focal in the coral reefs of Cuba directed to the affectation for hurricanes.

GOALS

d To characterise to focal biotic communities in the affected coral reefs frequently for hurricanes.

d To identify and to assess changes in structure and composition for species in the biotic communities.

d To digitise and to introduce the results of this study into to the National Geographic Information System.

d To insert results in the Educational Programme of the National Aquarium of Cuba.

2. Preliminary study of the invading populations of the lionfish (Teleostei: Scorpaenidae: Pterois sp.) in Cuban waters.

3. Automated inventory of the Cuban types specimen of marine species.
